UP Health System - Portage Adds Lithotripsy Services
February 26, 2020
UP Health System - Portage announced today the addition of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) to its Urology services. ESWL is a treatment that fragments kidney stones without the need for surgery. Shock waves transmitted through the skin shatter the stone with little effect on surrounding tissue. Its variable shockwave frequency and multiple power levels allow for efficient treatment of kidney stones with less pain for patients.
"We are thrilled to be able to offer this technology in our community and advance the high-quality care we provide to our patients," says Ryan Heinonen, interim chief executive officer of UPHS - Portage.
Some benefits from the ESWL procedure include less pain, non-invasive, less time spent in the hospital, low radiation exposure, and shorter treatment times.
"Our lithotripsy service will help make it possible for patients to get non-invasive kidney stone treatment while staying close to home," says Dr. Stephen Lipson, Urologist at UPHS - Portage.
Dr. Lipson offers urological services for disorders of the kidney, bladder, urinary tract, and male reproductive organs. UPHS - Portage sees patients for many conditions including, urinary disorders in men, women, and children, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, urologic cancers, urinary incontinence, male infertility, erectile dysfunction, and vasectomies.
