UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Linda Bergren

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am the manager of our Acute Medical and Surgical Unit at UPHS – Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

My mom’s friend was a nurse, and whenever one of us nine kids was injured, Joan would come patch us up. She inspired me to want to help people, and that is the reason I first wanted to get into healthcare.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

There is never a “typical” day on the 6th floor. Patients all have different needs and wants, and they are going through various illnesses and injuries. The one constant is that we always start the day at 7:00 am with a morning huddle to talk about what’s happening and what’s coming down the pike.

I have worked as an RN in medical-surgical, ICU, ER, PACU, and the business sector in the insurance industry, and I have held leadership positions in all these roles. I never imagined how many different roles a nurse could have or the extent to which I could learn and grow in this profession. It’s a very rewarding career.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have been here for two years and three months and have been in the same position the entire time.

What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?

One of the biggest challenges is finding patients a place to transition to when they can’t care for themselves but don’t require a lot of medical care. The ever-changing political environment has a huge impact on this. As a manager, there are always challenges related to the workforce, regulatory compliance and patient expectations.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

I love to work out. I love to walk from my house in Marquette to the lake to attend fairs and festivals. My favorite spot is Elizabeth’s for dinner, as it reminds me of where I grew up in Chicago, IL. I only go once or twice a year, as it is pricey, though.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

I love my staff and get such great satisfaction watching them learn and grow as individuals. I really appreciate how everyone at UP Health System – Marquette is friendly and helpful, and supportive of their communities.
