UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Hilia Sikkila

December 05, 2025

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am an analyst with Health Information Management (HIM) at UP Health System-Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

My first job was working in an adult foster care home. I really enjoyed working with patients and found it to be very rewarding.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

I analyze patient charts daily to ensure all documents are complete. When needed, I set up and train new providers in the dictation system. I also assist with processing patient charts as needed to help get them in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have been with the hospital for over 30 years. I started out working as an aide with MGH Health & Hospice, but then went in-house with housekeeping after my son was born, so I could have a more routine schedule with my son. Due to a back injury, I found myself working in the clerical field. I worked in medical records at family care and then came in-house to HIM with the hospital.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

The changeover when MGH was purchased by Lifepoint and learning the new EMR Systems.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

I love spending time in the world, camping and working in my garden.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

The people I work with, and helping others, whether it be assisting patients or my colleagues.
