UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Kelsy Debalak and Rylie Lefevre, RDMS, RVT

November 14, 2025

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

Rylie: I am a registered sonographer specializing in vascular ultrasound at UP Health System-Marquette.

Kelsy: I am a medical assistant in the Heart and Vascular Clinic at UP Health System-Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

Rylie:  I always knew I wanted to pursue a healthcare-related field. After being able to shadow multiple different specialties in high school, I knew that I wanted to do something imaging-related. After doing some research, I realized an ultrasound was exactly what I wanted to pursue.

Kelsy: My Mom and my Grandma were nurses, and that initially inspired me. When I went through EMT-Basic training, I realized Healthcare was truly for me.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

Rylie: A typical day begins with registering my clinic patients and preparing for the day's appointments. Throughout the day, I perform various exams and address any inpatient exams that need to be completed. After each exam, I review images and data to ensure accuracy and make it readily available for the physician's review and interpretation.

Kelsy: A typical day for me is busy; I get lots of steps in and have countless enjoyable interactions with our patients. Working in this field gives me a sense of purpose, and it is very educational; I'm always learning new things.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

Rylie: I have been at Marquette for a little over three years, one of those being in the Heart and Vascular clinic. Before being in the clinic, I worked in general ultrasound.

Kelsy: I have been employed here for nearly five months. I was previously a Care Aide/Unit Clerk in the Float Pool of the old hospital for about seven years.

What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?

Rylie: Switching from the general team, where you do a little bit of everything, to more advanced and specialized vascular ultrasounds was a big change

Kelsy: After being a stay-at-home Mom for a few years, it was quite the adjustment to return to work full-time. I am still adjusting, but it's going well.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

Rylie: Outside of work, I enjoy reading, spending time with my friends and family, and being with my dog, Milo. My favorite local gem is 231 West Patisserie, specifically for their macarons.

Kelsy: I love the local music scene and attend shows whenever I can. I also really enjoy fishing, hiking, and camping all over the U.P. My favorite local gem is probably Mount Marquette, which overlooks the city.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

Rylie: I truly value the opportunity to listen to my patients share their stories and life advice, while providing care and support throughout the imaging process.

Kelsy: I most enjoy my coworkers – I have really bonded with them, and of course, our patients – they really make this job one to be proud of.
