UPHS — Marquette Heroes | Kathy Jo Stratton, LPN
April 22, 2022

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
Getting my Medical First Responder (MFR) certification and then my Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license taught me that I truly wanted to help people beyond just getting them to the hospital.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I never have a typical day. I help keep our unit cleaned up and organized, manage supplies and equipment, take care of patients, and help all staff on the floor. Staff in ICU see a lot of unique situations and we're using new equipment and supplies often, so education and training are a regular occurrence on our floor.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
In June, it will be 23 years – always in the ICU.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The move to the new hospital was a big change, but that was my second big move for ICU. I also helped ICU move from the first floor at the old hospital to the fourth floor there, before finally moving to our current location. Technology and experience on the floor have been everchanging, so I'm learning all the time.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
The whole UP is my gem. Four-wheeling and golfing in the summer, walking my two dogs (chocolate labs), and the changing seasons are just a few of the things I love about our home.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The camaraderie that we all have and all the friendships I have made here over the years will be with me always.
