Heroes of UPHS – Bell | Mary Kay Grady

August 22, 2025

What is your role at UP Health System?

I’m a patient processing clerk at UPHS – Bell. I help patients get admitted for their appointments and make sure all the paperwork is ready.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

At 18, I was just looking for work. Bell was the first place that called, and the rest is history.

What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

It's busy. I get to meet so many incredible people. You never know who is going to come through the doors, but whoever they are, they’ll need our help. They’re like family.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

Forty-five years. I started in dietary, then worked in housekeeping, billing and registration, where I’ve been for 30 years.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

Technology. The introduction of computers, floppy disks and all kinds of software in between. There has been a lot to learn over the years, but the technology has improved drastically.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

Softball in the summer, bowling in the winter. I also volunteer for the Elks community dinners and the Westwood alumni softball tournament. You can find me in a lot of different places, but my favorite place is home.

What do you enjoy most about working at UP Health System?

My job. Registration for a visit can sometimes cause stress. But if I’m doing it right, hopefully I’m making a person’s day a little better.
