What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a controller at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
The hospital was one of the big employers back in the day. I thought accounting for a hospital would be a rewarding challenge.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
A typical day is filled with deadlines and requirements. What used to be a fairly typical monthly pattern has changed, and each day brings new duties and challenges.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I’ve been at UP Health System – Marquette for 33 years in various positions. I started in Home Health, where I handled payroll and Billing, then transitioned to Accounting. I later became the director of the business office and returned to Accounting as the controller.
What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?
There have been many changes, all of which need to be accounted for. The sale to Lifepoint, the move to the new hospital, and the sale/destruction of the old hospital.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I like to spend time outside in the summer (not so much in the winter). I enjoy walking, rock hunting, and just floating on the water. My favorite local gem is anything Lake Superior.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
What I enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette is the daily puzzles, as they keep my brain sharp. The people are amazing. I have met many good ones along the way.
