UPHS – Marquette Heroes | David Cable, MD

July 31, 2025

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at UP Health System – Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I’ve always had a strong interest in science and originally considered a career with the Department of Natural Resources. However, in 8th grade, a science teacher encouraged me to explore medicine instead. That conversation shifted my focus, and from that point on, I was determined to become a physician so I could help others in a meaningful way.

I was the first in my family to attend college and the first to pursue medical school. Along the way, I discovered a passion for research as a way to make an impact beyond individual patient care. I was especially drawn to heart and surgery, so my specialty became a natural and deeply fulfilling fit.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

A typical day starts early; I usually arrive at the hospital around 5:30 or 6 a.m. I begin by reviewing patient charts and lab results for those currently admitted. After that, I round on patients before heading to the operating room. I’m in surgery most days, with one day a week dedicated to clinic visits.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I’ve been at UP Health System – Marquette for three and a half years.

Before moving here, I practiced in Illinois for 15 years, in Louisiana for five years and in Minnesota for 10 years.

What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?

One of the biggest changes I’ve experienced in this position has been the focus on team building and the launch of the robotic surgery program. The rapid growth of that program is a clear indication that there was an unmet need for advanced surgical options in the Upper Peninsula. It has been incredibly rewarding to be part of building and expanding this service for our community.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

Outside of work, I enjoy hunting and fishing, interests that began during my upbringing in Iowa, where I spent a lot of time trout fishing and hunting birds like pheasants, ducks and geese. In recent years, especially after my sons moved out, I developed a passion for big game hunting as well.

Travel is another interest my wife and I share. Before the pandemic, we had the opportunity to travel extensively across the U.S. and internationally.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
What I enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette is the people, both my colleagues and the patients. Over time, we’ve built a strong, collaborative team across the office, operating room, ICU and patient care floors. It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch that team grow and thrive through each quality initiative.

The patients here are also a big part of what makes this work so meaningful. They remind me of the neighbors I grew up with, genuine, kind and deeply appreciative of the care they receive.
