UP Health System – Marquette Earns ACR Accreditation for Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
July 31, 2025
MARQUETTE, Mich. (July 31, 2025) — UP Health System – Marquette (UPHS – Marquette) has earned a three-year accreditation in stereotactic breast biopsy from the American College of Radiology (ACR).
UP Health System – Marquette is an ACR-designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center, accredited in stereotactic breast biopsy, mammography, breast ultrasound and breast MRI.
Stereotactic breast biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure that removes cells from a suspicious area in the breast with a hollow needle. A specialized mammography machine guides the radiologist’s instruments to the precise location of the abnormal tissue. The collected cells are then examined under a microscope to determine if cancer is present.
The ACR Gold Seal of Accreditation is the highest recognition for image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities that meet strict standards set by ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards. Facilities are evaluated by board-certified physicians and medical physicists on image quality, staff qualifications, equipment, quality control and assurance programs.
“Accurate, early diagnosis is critical in the fight against breast cancer. This ACR accreditation reinforces the quality and safety of our imaging services and the expertise of our care team,” said Denae Nadeau, imaging director of UPHS – Marquette. “We are proud to offer advanced diagnostic procedures like stereotactic breast biopsy right here in the Upper Peninsula, so patients can receive expert care close to home.”
For patients, the ACR gold seal means:
- The facility meets national standards for quality and safety in medical imaging
- Radiation doses are carefully monitored for adults and children
- Equipment is regularly inspected to ensure safe, accurate performance
- Radiologists are board-certified and participate in peer review
- The facility complies with federal safety regulations through regular site surveys
- ACR accreditation is recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for mammography and by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and nuclear medicine
The ACR has been a leader in radiology and radiation oncology accreditation for more than 30 years. Its programs help facilities continuously improve the quality of care through education and rigorous review.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States. About 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. With regular mammogram screenings— especially for individuals with family history or other high-risk factors, breast cancer can be detected as early as possible, when treatment is often more effective.
UPHS – Marquette offers advanced imaging and radiology services to diagnose and treat breast disease, including 3D mammography, breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided biopsy, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast MRI, MRI-guided breast biopsy and lymphoscintigraphy.
The multidisciplinary team includes skilled mammographers, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, plastic/reconstructive surgeons, pathologists, genetic counselors, health psychologists, physical therapists, clinical trials nurses, breast imaging nurses and a patient navigator.
