UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Megan Richards, RN

August 21, 2025

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am a registered nurse on the sixth floor (medical/surgical) at UP Health System – Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I’ve always enjoyed helping people, so becoming a nurse seemed like the perfect fit.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

There is no “typical” day in my job, and that’s what I love about it. Each day presents challenges in different ways and pushes me to be flexible and adapt to whatever comes my way. I help train many new hires on our floor and enjoy being a helping hand to those who need me.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I started as a care aide on the sixth floor during my last semester of nursing school. I graduated from Northern in December 2016 and transitioned to my current RN role in January 2017 and have been in this position ever since.

What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?

In the eight years that I’ve been working as an RN, I’ve experienced quite a few changes, including moving into an entirely new hospital and learning a new computer system. Some of the biggest changes these days are keeping up with best practices, adjusting my care accordingly and helping teach these approaches to incoming staff.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

We recently welcomed our third baby boy, so most of our time is spent at home enjoying time together as a family. When able, we love getting out with our kids to local playgrounds and exploring hiking trails.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

The thing I love most about working at UPHS – Marquette, especially on our floor, is knowing that my coworkers always have my back. Our floor is challenging and fast-paced. It’s a relief knowing there’s always someone in my corner and that no matter how hard the day may be, we always get through it together.
