Residency Curriculum

Through a combination of required and elective rotations, our residents gain a broad-based education across a broad range of medical specialties. There are 13 four-week blocks each year. Inpatient training is provided at UP Health System – Marquette and our residents complete outpatient rotations at the Peninsula Medical Center and throughout the community with partnering physicians.

Introductory Month
First-year residents start their training with a four-week Introduction to Residency. This rotation is designed with hands-on experiences to prepare new residents for the common and critical clinical situations they will soon face. Residents are encouraged to build relationships with members of the interprofessional health care team and learn how the team most effectively works together to provide excellent patient care in the hospital and in the family medicine center. Hands-on review of examination skills and coaching with hospital information systems all actively prepare residents for their new role.

Rural Focus
Second-year residents complete a four-week rural immersion in an Upper Peninsula community, providing firsthand experience with rural practice and the unique health care needs of these communities.

Maternity Outreach
Throughout all three years of residency, residents participate in maternity outreach in Manistique and Newberry, Upper Peninsula communities with limited access to maternity services. This experience allows residents to provide prenatal and postpartum care while helping reduce barriers to care in underserved rural communities.

Community Medicine
Strong community connections are essential to effective family medicine. This rotation helps residents understand how community resources, systems, and social factors influence health while developing their own roles as physician leaders. During this rotation, residents will rotate with the local health department, mental health organizations, senior services, and other community partners.

Path to Professionalism (P2P)
Path to Professionalism (P2P) is a longitudinal, interactive curriculum that brings residents together every year to explore the nonclinical skills essential to becoming effective family physicians and physician leaders. The rotation utilizes various teaching methods including didactic and interactive presentations, focused discussions, skill practice with feedback, and attitude exploration to achieve the goal of recognition of the broad scope of Family Medicine. Topics include population health, social determinants of health, communication skills, interplay with legal and health services systems, healthcare quality, equity and disparities, healthcare economics and personal financial wellness, patient safety, professional and leadership responsibilities, and biopsychosocial care.

Integrative Medicine Track
Our program offers an optional Integrative Medicine in Residency program for interested learners. This longitudinal experience consists of online modules maintained at the University of Arizona/Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine (AWCIM) and local coordination with the curriculum advisor. This curriculum exposes residents to evidence-based therapies that are both conventional and complementary, as well as additional resources for patients regarding the efficacy and safety of various treatment modalities. Integrative Medicine emphasizes a holistic, patient-focused approach to health care and wellness and treating the whole person rather than, for example, one organ system.

Osteopathic Medicine
Our Osteopathic Recognition curriculum, led by Director of Osteopathic Education Dexter Clark, DO, provides opportunities for both DO and MD residents to develop skills in osteopathic principles and practice, including osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Residents interested in this additional osteopathic training may participate in monthly hands-on OMT sessions.

Global Health
Medicine and health transcend geographic boundaries. Second- and third-year residents have the opportunity to participate in a global health rotation as an elective. Our residency has a sustained, annual rotation with Hillside Health in rural Belize, where residents gain experience providing care in a resource-limited setting while developing skills in cultural humility, travel medicine, infectious disease and global health systems. Funding is available to support resident travel.
