What is your role at UP Health System – Portage?
I am a registered nurse (RN) in Labor & Delivery and sometimes on MedSurg.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
When I was young, I always looked up to those in healthcare and knew I wanted to do something like that. Also, I was inspired by my mom and two of my brothers who are also in healthcare.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I work three night shifts a week. A typical night in Labor & Delivery starts by getting to know my patient/patients, and it can look a little different from there depending on the patients' needs. This could include triaging patients, labor support, an unscheduled caesarean, stabilizing sick newborns, breastfeeding help, and, of course, rocking babies while the mom sleeps. It’s a rewarding job and a special place to be in a delivery room!
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been at Portage for going on seven years. I started as a certified nursing assistant on MedSurg for a few years, then while I was going to nursing school, I transferred to a licensed practical nurse position on MedSurg and then finally to RN. After a year on MedSurg, I decided I wanted to try Labor & Delivery and I love it!
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
A recent change we have had was welcoming a new OB/GYN provider, Dr. Evon Schexnaydre. It’s good for both our department and the community to have another provider in place. We are happy to have her!
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love to travel to new places and be outside—whether it's hiking, skiing, boating or sightseeing. Like most people, my favorite local gem is Lake Superior! My favorite beaches are White City and Bete Grise.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
My coworkers—I have always enjoyed all of them. Everyone has always stepped in to help each other with a positive attitude. Emergent situations and babies coming fast can happen, so to have awesome teamwork is what keeps our patients happy and healthy!
