Main Parking Lot Construction at UP Health System – Portage to Begin Monday, May 12
May 9, 2025

HANCOCK, Mich. (May 9, 2025) UP Health System – Portage (UPHS – Portage) will begin construction on its main parking lot starting Monday, May 12, 2025. This critical improvement project involves a full repaving of the lot and will be conducted in two phases to minimize disruption to patients, visitors and staff.
During the phased construction, half of the main parking lot will remain accessible at all times, ensuring that the hospital's main entrance remains fully operational. Clear signage and guidance will be provided on-site to direct traffic and help maintain smooth access for all hospital users.
“This investment in our infrastructure is part of our ongoing commitment to improving the overall experience at UPHS – Portage,” said Ryan Heinonen, CEO at UPHS – Portage. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we make these necessary upgrades to better serve our patients, visitors and team members.”
Here are a few key details:
- Campus Drive Main Entrance will be closed, continue to Portage Drive for the temporary entrance (shown below)
- Patients can park in the designated spots (highlighted below) in the front and rear entrances
- Staff are encouraged to park along Campus Drive (angled) and Portage Drive (parallel)
- Local transit buses will be able to access the "u-shaped" entrance, but will require turning around
