UP Health System – Marquette Welcomes clinical neuropsychologist Keara J. Kangas, Ph.D.

UP Health System – Marquette (UPHS – Marquette) is pleased to welcome Keara J. Kangas, Ph.D., clinical neuropsychologist, to its Brain & Spine team.

Kangas specializes in adult neuropsychology, providing assessment and care for patients experiencing cognitive and behavioral changes associated with neurological conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, stroke, brain tumors and multiple sclerosis.

Kangas earned her doctorate from Marquette University in Milwaukee and her master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Northern Michigan University in Marquette. She also completed a fellowship at Michigan Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Kangas said she was drawn to UP Health System by the opportunity to provide specialized neuropsychological services to patients throughout the Upper Peninsula and help address access to specialty care in rural communities. She also looks forward to collaborating with other medical providers and continuing to develop neuropsychological services in the region.

“What I find most rewarding about neuropsychology is the opportunity to help patients and their families better understand how various factors influence memory, thinking, mood, behavior and everyday functioning,” Kangas said. “Neuropsychological evaluations can help answer complicated diagnostic questions, but they’re also about understanding each patient’s unique experiences, challenges and strengths. I enjoy putting the pieces together, helping patients make sense of their experiences and providing meaningful recommendations that can improve their quality of life.”

Having previously studied and worked in Marquette, Kangas said she appreciates the Upper Peninsula’s sense of community and outdoor lifestyle and is excited to make Marquette home.

Kangas will see patients at UP Health System – Marquette Brain & Spine Center, 850 W. Baraga Ave., Suite 34, in Marquette. A referral is required before scheduling an appointment.
