UP Medical Group Launches Bone Health Clinic in Marquette to Combat Osteoporosis
August 7, 2024

UP Medical Group, in collaboration with the Advanced Center for Orthopedics, is pleased to announce the opening of its bone health clinic to address the growing concern of osteoporosis among Upper Peninsula residents. Led by Physician Issam El Bizri, MD, and Certified Physician Assistant Allison Blaksmith, PA-C, the clinic will offer comprehensive services focused on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this common and debilitating bone disease.
Osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weakened and less dense bones, affects millions of Americans, with men and women over 50 being particularly at risk. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, an estimated 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and another 43 million have low bone mass. Yet, only 33 percent of the eligible population are being treated or screened for the condition, putting them at increased risk for fractures. These fractures can lead to significant pain, disability, loss of independence and even death.
“Osteoporosis is often a silent disease, with no symptoms until a bone breaks,” said Dr. El Bizri. “Our goal is to work closely with area primary care providers to educate our patients and the community about the importance of bone health, identify who is most at risk, and provide early intervention to prevent bone loss and fractures.
Along with being over the age of 50, there are several other factors associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis, including race (white or of Asian descent), being small or thin in stature, having a history of smoking or excessive alcohol intake, gut malabsorption syndromes, and more.
“I see individuals every day who have experienced osteoporotic fractures and the toll it can take on their wellbeing and independence is devastating,” said Allison. “We are excited to bring this specialized care to our community and see the positive impact it will have over time.”
The new bone health clinic will offer a range of services including the coordination of bone density scans, comprehensive bone health and fall risk assessments, counseling on calcium and vitamin D intake, medication therapy management, personalized treatment plans, behavior modification counseling and more. Patients can expect to receive compassionate care from a team dedicated to optimizing bone health and improving quality of life.
The new bone health clinic is located within UP Medical Group | Medical Specialists, at 1414 W. Fair Ave., Ste. 344, Marquette.
