FDA Updates Blood Donor Eligibility Guidelines
June 19, 2025

UP Health System – Marquette is pleased to share an important update that supports a more inclusive and equitable blood donation process, following recent changes from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA has revised its blood donor eligibility guidelines to focus on individual risk assessment, rather than broad policies based on sexual orientation or gender. This change allows all potential donors to be evaluated based on their personal health history and recent sexual behavior—not their identity.
These updates eliminate previous restrictions that disproportionately impacted members of the LGBTQ+ community and mark a shift toward a science-based, equitable approach to donor screening.
What to Expect
The Regional Blood Center at UP Health System has updated its donor questionnaire to align with the new FDA guidelines. All donors are now asked the same set of questions regarding recent sexual activity and other health-related behaviors, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. This standardized approach enhances the safety of the blood supply while treating every donor with dignity and respect.
What This Means for Our Community
These changes mean more individuals may now be eligible to donate blood—especially those who were previously deferred under outdated criteria. We encourage community members to review the new guidelines or speak with our team to determine current eligibility.
Expanding the donor pool is especially important in rural and smaller communities like ours, where every donation makes a difference. One blood donation can save up to three lives, and all blood collected at the Regional Blood Center stays local, directly supporting patients at UP Health System – Marquette and across the Upper Peninsula.
