  • UPHS – Bell Heroes | Melissa Perry

    October 21, 2022

What is your role at UPHS – Bell? I am a financial counselor at UP Health System – Bell. What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field? There are several aspects of the job. I take patient questions and payments on bills along with setting up payment plans. I also help patients apply for Medicaid and financial assistance. Finally, I am responsible for running upfront estimates of out-of-pocket costs for patients. I personally like having an array of daily tasks, there is never a dull moment. How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position? I started 18 years ago in Women’s Care as a receptionist and was there for eight years, I then moved into a financial counselor role for physician practices for five years and spent another five years as a pre-registration coordinator. Now, most recently in July, I transitioned to financial counselor for the hospital. What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem? I enjoy going camping in our travel trailer with my husband and two boys ages 10 and 13. What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Bell? The people and the hometown feel of a small hospital is what I enjoy most.
