What is your role at UP Health System – Portage?
I am a registered nurse (RN) at PortagePointe, caring for the needs of elderly residents.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I’ve received a lot of help during times of need, and I felt that healthcare would be a meaningful way for me to give back and help others with the same care I was shown.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
A typical day starts with a report from the previous shift about what’s going on and what needs to happen to keep the residents safe and healthy. The day goes by quickly—it's a busy place! I enjoy spending time with the elders. Some days, it feels like I’m handing out medication all day, but it’s a rewarding field. We get to know the residents well, and the staff makes it a joy to come to work. We’re all in it together.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I’ve worked here for four and a half years in long-term care. Before that, I worked for Portage as an RN in medical-surgical, labor and delivery, and home health and hospice.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
Some of the biggest changes have been staff moving to different roles and new supervisors bringing fresh ideas and strengths. Many positive changes have happened—healthcare is always evolving.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, I love spending time with my family, especially my grandchildren. I enjoy sunshine and spending summer outdoors. My favorite local gem is Lake Superior.
What do you enjoy most about working at UP Health System – Portage?
I enjoy working with the elderly and with the helpful, supportive staff. It’s a great team.
