What is your role at UP Health System — Portage?
HR Coordinator. My role here is to assist managers with the onboarding process of hiring talented individuals to work within our organization. I am also responsible for New Hire Orientation, license and certification tracking, lead in the RQI CPR credentialing program, and support for benefits and payroll.
How long have you been employed with us? Have you always been in the same position?
I was hired in April 2021 as an HR assistant and transferred into my new role as HR Coordinator in July 2021.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I spend a lot of time on the phone making offers to new candidates, working with managers to get open positions created and posted, transferring employees to their new positions. Twice a month we have new hire orientation, my day is spent educating the new hires in portage policies and amenities we offer as an employer. I am also the UPHS – Portage training facility coordinator and work with the community CPR instructors on classes and assigning certifications. As a BLS Instructor, I get to meet new people and hear their exciting stories of why they want to be certified in CPR and First Aid.
Tell us a little bit about your family.
I am originally from Ontonagon where most of my family still lives, I reside in Baraga where I have been for the past 16 years. I have 2 daughters, one is a Certified Nurses Aide and the other is a Medical Assistant and they have given me 4 wonderful grandchildren. I also have a son who is a chef.
What sorts of things do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to spend my time outdoors, taking adventures on the hiking trails, visiting local farms to see all the wonderful animals, and going out to the camp for some relaxation and fishing. In the winter I spend every weekend I can snowmobiling and building snowmen.
If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why?
My family has a German heritage so I guess I would love to visit Germany and learn more about my ancestors one day. Most of my travel is consumed by going to Washington and Arizona to visit family.
