Elizabeth Miller, Occupational Therapist for UP Health System – Portage.
What is your title and role at UPHS – Portage?
I am an Occupational Therapist for pediatric outpatients at UP Health System – Portage.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My inspiration for getting into the healthcare field was to help people get back to their daily routines. I enjoy working with children and seeing their excitement when they can begin to do activities that may once have been difficult for them or complete for the first time.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
A typical day begins working in the school system where I help children with fine motor skills for writing, cutting, dressing, and using utensils throughout the day within the school environment. I then see outpatients after school to work on their fine motor skills necessary for basic self-help skills, as well as learning how to play with toys. I often work closely with our pediatric speech and physical therapist to collaborate and integrate all areas to help the children excel. It is very exciting to be working in this field because I feel I get to know the families very well. Often when children reach goals it is such a celebration for everyone involved, especially because this may be the first time they have been able to accomplish specific tasks, such as tying their shoes or writing their name.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I began working in December 2013 and have continued to work in both the outpatient setting and school system.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
One of the changes that I have experienced within this position is an increase in the number of students that are being serviced. I feel the number within the school system is rising and people are becoming more aware of the impact occupational therapy can have within that environment. It is nice to see the early intervention assisting all students.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What/where is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family outside. I am married and we have a 5-year-old son and 3 dogs. We enjoy all outdoor activities including hiking, skiing, fishing, swimming, and boating. My favorite local gem is Keystone. It is a nice sandy beach off of the path and typically not too busy.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
At work, what I enjoy most is my coworkers. Our rehab department is a wonderful group of people who brighten our atmosphere and are always willing to help out when needed.
