UPHS — Portage Heroes | Aylee Dessellier, R.T. (R) (ARRT)

What is your role at UPHS – Portage?
I am a Radiologic Technologist at UP Health System — Portage Express Care, located in Calumet.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I've always wanted to have a positive impact on people's lives and to help them feel better. I cannot think of any better way to do that, than to work in a place where the main focus is to do just that. Radiology has been the perfect fit because we provide necessary imaging to help providers diagnose, monitor, and treat patients.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
A typical day for me consists of registering and performing x-ray and lab orders. Other duties that I have are COVID-19 swabs, and every other weekend I add on the role of PSR. With Express Care being a walk-in clinic, you never know what will happen, so it keeps things interesting and I enjoy it.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started working here in July of 2021 after completing my degree and national boards in May. I am primarily at the Express Care in Calumet, but I have also worked at the University Center doing x-rays and labs.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
I graduated relatively recently, so I have gained plenty of new skills from when I first began working here. I believe I will continue to keep learning new things every day.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, I like to go on adventures with my boyfriend and three dogs. I also like to watch movies, listen to music, and paint. My favorite local gem would have to be the top of Mount Ripley and the views it provides.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
My favorite part of working here would have to be my coworkers. Everyone at the clinic is supportive of each other and we get along so well, that I consider them to be my second family. I also appreciate everyone in the Radiology Department — they welcomed me with open arms, and continue to be very friendly and helpful.
