What is your official title?
I am a Premier Hospitalist at UP Health System — Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I have always enjoyed people and science. If you combine those things with a desire to problem solve and an affinity for coffee, you end up in healthcare.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
When I get to work, my team energizes me, and I settle in and review as much patient information as I can before I’m called to tend to the needs of our hospital team.  

I discuss patient care with the care managers and the nursing staff before seeing all of my patients for the day starting with critically ill patients. After everyone has been seen and a plan is in place, I start to document notes for the day, spending extra time delving into some of the more complex cases. At the end of the day, I reach out to families to let them know how their loved ones are doing here in the hospital.

Working as a hospitalist is at times exciting and other times challenging, but it always goes back to being rewarding and fun when I get to help patients and eventually reconvene with my team.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed here for over seven years. I was a resident physician in training for my first three years, but since 2016 I have been working as a full-time hospitalist.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
This job has not really changed much over the last few years. The way in which I document has changed somewhat, but the bulk of what I do has remained the same, although COVID-19 has definitely increased the number of patients we are seeing. The biggest change I have experienced was moving into our new hospital, but thanks to exhaustive planning, the transition was surprisingly smooth.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy road and trail running in addition to mountain biking. When the weather gets colder, I like to do some snow biking and I start to get back into weight training as well. Prior to COVID-19, traveling was something I did as often as possible.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The thing I enjoy most about working here is the people – especially the friendships I have made over the years.
