What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a volunteer at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My inspiration for getting into healthcare comes from a lifelong desire to serve others. I spent my career as a military police officer and eventually became deputy chief at KI Sawyer, where protecting and helping people was at the core of what I did every day. After retiring, I knew I wanted to continue giving back, so I started volunteering with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Marquette General Hospital, and UP Health System. Over the past 22 years, that volunteer work has become a big part of my life. Being able to support others in times of need is incredibly meaningful to me, and healthcare has given me a fulfilling way to continue serving my community.
What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
My day typically involves helping wherever I’m needed. I assist with transporting patients to the lab, X-ray, and surgery, and I also support staff with computer registration and other tasks. Every day brings something different, and I’m always ready to lend a hand wherever I can make a difference.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I’ve been involved with the hospital for many years, serving in various roles. I worked with the Lifeline program, assisted at the help desk near the parking deck, and supported multiple departments as needed. My roles have included surgery registration, staffing the information desk at the Medical Office Building, and even tracking down wheelchairs when needed. My responsibilities have always varied, but the constant has been my commitment to helping patients and staff wherever I’m needed most.
What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?
One of the most significant changes I’ve experienced was the transition to the new hospital building. The move marked a major shift, not just in location but in how everything operates. This facility is much more modern and better organized, which has made it easier to navigate and more efficient for both patients and staff. The improved layout and updated systems have really enhanced the overall experience for everyone.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite gem?
Outside of work, I enjoy staying active and spending time outdoors. Some of my favorite hobbies include reading, golfing, fishing, and gardening. I also love taking in all that the Upper Peninsula has to offer—it's a beautiful place to explore and relax. As for my favorite local gem, without a doubt, it’s my wife.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
What I enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette is the opportunity to meet and help people every day. Whether it's offering directions, lending a hand, or simply sharing a friendly conversation, I find it incredibly rewarding to be able to make someone's day a little easier or brighter. It's the connections with patients, visitors, and staff that make this work so meaningful to me.
