What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am the Clinic Manager of Emergency Medical Associates in the Emergency Department (ED) at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I initially went into nursing but decided that route was not for me. I proceeded to get a business degree and completed an internship at Marquette General, and I have since never left! I found this was a better role for myself, yet still being able to work within the healthcare field.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I wouldn’t say any day is “typical” in the ER! However, my job consists of managing the business functions of the ED. This includes audits, charge capture review, payroll, supervising the clerical staff, and overseeing the ED physician group.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed here for 33 years. I initially started in the ED as a unit clerk in 1988. I temporarily moved away due to spouse employment in 1991 but returned to Marquette General in 1992 working in the business office for 6 years. I returned to the ED in 1998 as a unit clerk and in 2004, I transitioned into a management position where I currently am today.
What are some of the significant changes you have experienced in this position?
There have been several – I have experienced two ED moves, transitioned from paper charts to electronic medical records (EMR), and worked with several different staff and generations.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy spending time with family and friends, exploring the outdoors, and traveling to new places. Among the amazing local gems, I would say my favorite is the variety of beautiful hiking paths that are available to us year-round!
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
My co-workers! I have had the honor of working with so many different people, most of which I have made life-long friendships with.
