What is your role at UPHS?
I am a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department (ED) at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
Growing up, my grandmother was a nurse and people always would come up to me and tell me how wonderful she was. It was inspiring to see a small community speak so highly of her! As I got older and started considering career options, my goal was to be able to help people the same way she did for so long.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
The ED is a very busy place to work. We cannot control who comes through our doors or what trauma happens in the field. This job is very fast-paced—you have to be quick on your feet and in your decision-making to allow for the best possible outcome for our patients. It is very exciting and rewarding to see our team help people when they come to Marquette.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have worked here for four years. I started working in the Medical-Surgical Unit and then I transferred to the ED.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
A major change is all the additional training and certifications it takes to be an ED nurse. We spend countless hours getting additional education to allow us to be prepared for anything and everything.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, cross-country skiing and downhill, golf, and taking my dog for hikes. My favorite local gem is Blackrocks Brewery.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The people I work with are amazing. In the ED, everyone works so well together and it just makes for a fun work environment in a department that is stressful more times than not.
