What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am the clinic office clerk at Brain & Spine at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
The hospital was a big part of my life growing up. I experienced what it was like to be a patient, a patient’s loved one and a caregiver. I also witnessed how much healthcare employees could help—even if it was just making someone feel welcome, seen and heard.
As a result, those personal experiences fostered a passion for medicine, interpersonal connection and a desire to help others. That ultimately led me back to the hospital, this time as one of the healthcare workers I once looked up to.
What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
A typical day always involves interacting with my colleagues and patients, whether by phone or face-to-face. Every day brings something new, which is what makes healthcare so challenging—yet exciting. There’s never a dull day, and I always leave feeling fulfilled.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I’ve been working at the hospital since December 2021, starting in patient registration. In September 2023, I joined the Brain & Spine Department, where I’ve been ever since.
What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?
I started off working at the front desk in Brain & Spine. As I gained experience and colleagues moved into new roles, I was able to transition into being the referral coordinator for Neurology.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite gem?
I enjoy playing games—either on my own or with friends and family. I also love being outside on the trails or going for a bike ride, weather permitting (we all know how the Upper Peninsula can be). As for local gems, it’s hard to pick a favorite, but I’ve always found great comfort and joy in Presque Isle.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The people—patients and colleagues alike. They’re the biggest reason why UPHS – Marquette is such an enjoyable place to work.
