Justine Nelson, Care Aide/Unit Clerk on the Behavioral Health Unit at UP Health System – Marquette.
What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a Care Aide/Unit Clerk on the Behavioral Health Unit at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My great aunt had a stroke when she was very young. Growing up, I watched my grandmother and a team of healthcare workers help her with many aspects of her day-to-day life. They were always so patient and kind – it really inspired me to get into the healthcare field.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Most of my days are spent communicating with attorneys, the probate court, providers, RNs, community mental health workers, social workers, and my fellow staff on the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit. I’m usually at my desk coordinating meetings and ensuring everyone is on the same page. Whenever I can, I like getting out on the floor and helping our patients with anything they may need.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I’ve been on the unit for a little over a year. When I started, I was able to work in the Care Aide side of the role more often than I do now.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The biggest change came a few months ago when I became the primary Unit Clerk for the BH unit. I’ve gained more responsibilities with the role and it has been a rewarding experience.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy spending my free time being creative – I typically draw or paint. When it’s warm, I love finding a spot next to Lake Superior to relax and read a good book.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
My coworkers and our patients always find a way to teach me something new each day.
