What is your role at UPHS?
I am the Referral Specialist at the Pediatric Specialists office at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I love helping others and working hard. While nursing isn't specifically for me, I've found an appreciation for the work that goes on behind the scenes in each office and I love that I can be a part of it.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I am never bored at work, which is something I love about my current position. I spend my days processing all of the referrals that our providers order for our patients and coordinating where they will need to be referred to depending on the urgency, insurance type, and distance to each facility. I submit prior authorizations needed for any appointments, follow up on previous referrals to make sure they have been taken care of, and help our front office staff as needed.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed for just over four years. I started out as a front desk clerk in 2019 and then switched to the referral specialist position in 2021.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The only big changes that I have had to navigate at my current position would be the changes in available specialists who see pediatric patients. When a specialist leaves a facility, I have my work cut out for me to research and try to find alternative options for our patients to receive the care that they need in a timely manner, while not having to travel too far.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, you can find me at the gym, walking my dog, or traveling to visit family whenever I can.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I really enjoy my coworkers and the providers I work for. While working in healthcare can be challenging, we all work together to provide the best care for our patients—and that is something I really appreciate.
