What is your official title?

I am the new Clinical Educator for UPHS-Marquette.  

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

When I was 12 years old, I broke my arm. In the emergency room, I needed an IV for conscious sedation due to the medical team needing to reset my arm. I learned going through this experience that providing empathy for my patients is very important for helping patients feel at ease.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field? 

I teach nursing orientation and I am currently planning Universal Skills Day for our hospital. My day is also spent creating orientation schedules, helping manage the staffing pool, assisting with several committees, and answering questions from my team. 

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position? 

I started as a nurse on the Medical/Oncology unit in 2012. In 2015, I moved into the clinical manager role there. I worked in that role until 2017 when I had my first child. After I had my son, I wanted a better work-life balance, so I took a contingent hospital supervisor position. I adored working in this role but decided it was time for a change, so I went back to work full-time and began the clinical educator position. 

What are some of the big changes you have experiences in this position?

I am navigating my new schedule and my two small children are adapting to full-time daycare. I have found that I am truly enjoying onboarding our new RNs and LPNs. I find this job to fit my personality very well, and it is very rewarding. Education is a vital part of our organization and I hope to help our new employees and continue educating our current employees. The only constant in health care is “change” itself. I want to make sure we are all educated on changes that occur in our organization and help make the transitions smoother for all. 

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

I attended Northern Michigan University and was drawn to the area because I am an avid skier. I raced for NMU on their club alpine team all 4 years in college. I still race at Marquette Mountain in an adult race league during the winter. My family enjoys the beach and we spend a lot of time there in the summer. My husband’s family has property in Big Bay, so we head up there often as well. My favorite local gem is Wetmore Beach in Marquette – so gorgeous and usually less crowded than the local beaches, plus my sweet pup can tag along with me there!

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette? 

I love the relationships I have formed at UPHS. Everyone is kind and it always puts a smile on my face to see my peers working with each other. I love being a part of making our community happier and healthier.
