What is your role at UP Health System – Marquette?
I am a Plant Operations Specialist at UP Health System – Marquette and I also work with the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I was lucky to start my career at Marquette General Hospital soon after graduating from the Northern Michigan University Skill Center's HVAC Course.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Every day is different which is what makes my job so interesting. I get a lot of satisfaction from working on important pieces of equipment and getting them back into service. It's also very important to make sure our patients are comfortable during their stay.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started in 1986 as a boiler operator and was promoted to HVAC technician during the construction of the Robert C. Neldberg Building. I experienced a lot of growth at Marquette General Hospital over the years. I got to witness the many building expansions and remodels. Now I am watching all the buildings come down as the former hospital property is being transitioned into something new, which I find bittersweet.
What are some of the significant changes you have experienced in this position?
The technology in my field is constantly changing and can be very demanding. It can be challenging at times, but I love learning new things as they change. You can teach an old dog new tricks.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
The whole Upper Peninsula (UP) is a favorite gem. My biggest passion has to be playing golf. I love trying new courses around the UP as well as other states when I get the chance. I enjoy all sports, especially watching the Green Bay Packers. My wife and I love to travel when the opportunity happens, especially to Washington state to see my granddaughters, daughter and son-in-law. We just added an Aussie puppy to our family which is keeping us active.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I enjoy the people I have worked with over the years. I have worked with so many different team members and have learned a lot from them. Our shop has always been a great team and I certainly share this honor with them as they all deserve it too.
