What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a Hospital Supervisor at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My first degree was in Exercise Science. I originally considered a career in Athletic Training or Physical Therapy because I was always involved in sports while growing up. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I had hoped for, so I decided to look into healthcare. Nursing sparked an interest in what I wanted to do as a career and so I began working as a Nurse Extern in an ICU while pursuing a nursing degree.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
The hospital supervisor position has many different tasks. The hospital supervisor who works the night shift is the go-to person for almost anything during the shift. I assist in helping place patients on the right units, take reports from outlying hospitals, and I round on all the units and help make sure they are adequately staffed. If the OR is required during the night, I get OR staff called in and updated, procure and organize any equipment that may be needed, and I try to serve as a resource for any questions that any staff member may have.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I’ve been here for 17 years. I started out working in the ICU for 10 years and have been in my current position for the last 7 years.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The overall role of the “hospital supervisor” has changed over the years. Many changes are related to the move to the new facility, the transition to UP Health System, and the COVID-19 pandemic. We wear a lot of hats, but having a great night shift team throughout the facility makes the job enjoyable.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy spending time with my wife, two kids, and our golden retriever. During the summer months, we like to do a lot of camping throughout the Midwest. During the winter, I enjoy snowshoeing.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
Without a doubt, the people I work with. They always work together and go above and beyond. No matter how stressful or busy a night can be, every teammate does what is needed – every time.
