October 15, 2024
UP Health System – Portage (UPHS – Portage) is pleased to announce physician Valerie Taglione, MD, has joined its medical staff as a hospitalist. Board-certified in family medicine and specializing in hospital medicine, Dr. Taglione will manage the care of ill, injured and recovering patients throughout their hospital stay.
A Houghton native, Dr. Taglione pursued her undergraduate degree in Medical Laboratory Science at Michigan Technological University. She then went on to attend medical school at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, MI. Following medical school, Dr. Taglione completed her residency through the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program, serving as a hospitalist at UP Health System – Marquette upon completion.
“Being from the area, the UP is not only home to me, but a place where I have been called to serve,” she said. “After practicing in Marquette for two years, I wanted to be closer to home and family.”
Dr. Taglione will work closely with inpatient clinical staff — nurses, specialists, surgeons, and rehabilitation staff — to ensure coordination of care, seamless communication, timely interventions and the scheduling of appropriate follow-up care upon discharge. Hospitalists play a vital role in healthcare, enhancing patient safety, satisfaction, and overall outcomes during critical hospital stays.
“It is gratifying to be able to care for acutely ill patients with a variety of seemingly unrelated symptoms and using diagnostic tools and investigative tests to solve the puzzle of the disease process and help heal the patient,” she said.
Outside of work, Dr. Taglione enjoys reading, crocheting, playing music, rollerblading and a variety of winter sports like cross-country skiing and snowboarding.
Dr. Taglione joins an experienced hospitalist team, including Tim LaBonte, MD; Lori Vaughan, MD; Jenny Bausano, NP; Tara Lassila, PA; and Melissa Meier, NP, at 500 Campus Drive, Hancock, MI.
