What is your role at UPHS - Portage?
I am employed at PortagePointe as a Certified Nursing Assistant. I am responsible for taking care of elders and their needs.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
When I started taking Health Occupations at Marquette Senior High School. I realized that being in health care was a passion of mine.
What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
A typical day for me starts 7am, as the elders are waking up. We get them ready for the day, then serve and feed them their meal. Throughout the day, I provide individual care for each of the elders in my house. Although my day is busy, it is such a rewarding job.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed at PortagePointe for 15 years. I have also worked an additional eight years on the inpatient unit at Portage, for a total of 23 years.
What are some of the biggest changes you've experienced in this position?
I have been through many big changes: a change in ownership, numerous expansions, and three different name changes. I also watched PortagePointe grow from a 30-bed to 60-bed facility, and the construction of three additional houses.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I am an avid Red Wings, Tigers and Lions fan. Also enjoy spending time with my family at our camp on Big Lake Gerald in Twin Lakes. I love to shop and get a good deal.
My favorite local gem is The Ambassador; you can never go wrong with pizza and an order of nachos.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS - Portage?
My elders and my coworkers. I love coming to work to see my elders. Its warms my heart to see their smiling faces. They are my 2nd family. We have an amazing group of coworkers at Portage Point, as we take great care of the elders.
