What is your role at UP Health System — Portage?
I am an exercise specialist at the fitness center.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I have loved sports, strength & conditioning, and fitness since I was young. I believe healthcare starts with fitness— taking care of our physical and mental well-being.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
My typical day starts early. People like to wake up and get it done. I usually start at 6 am and finish with all of my clients and classes by 2 pm.
Working in this field is easy when you love what you do. I get to help people move better, eat better and challenge themselves. The impact beyond the walls of the fitness center is truly priceless.
I also have the opportunity to continue my education by focusing more on the medical exercise side of the field.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
In October of this year, I will have been here for three years. I have always been an exercise specialist.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy doing the same things I teach every day. If it involves using your fitness and being outdoors, count me in — hiking, biking, kayaking, basketball, martial arts and more. I'm also a bit of a rockhound. I've been scouring local beaches and tailings piles regularly since arriving in the Keweenaw. I could name more than a few favorite spots, but I really love the hike at Blacks Creek Nature Sanctuary, and my favorite beach to walk is Waterworks.
What do you enjoy most about working at UP Health System — Portage?
My fitness team and my leadership team — everyone here gets along and works well together. I also appreciate getting to know the people in our community. I interact with so many individuals each day, and I enjoy cultivating those relationships.
