What is your role at UP Health System – Portage?
I am an exercise specialist and certified personal trainer at the Portage Fitness Center.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I’ve always been involved in physical fitness and really enjoy helping people achieve their goals and improving their self-confidence and quality of life.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
My typical day usually starts by waking up at 3 am to do my cardio, then I’m at the fitness center in the morning to work with clients before I go to school. Then, I head to school and teach physical education all day. After school is usually when I hit the gym myself to lift workout, then I’m back at the fitness center in the late afternoons to work with clients again or teach a fitness class.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I’ve been employed with the Portage Fitness Center for just over five years and have held the same position since I was hired.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The biggest changes for me are the fluctuations I experience with my client load. Some months my schedule is packed and other months I have room for more clients to come on board.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
My interests outside of work are very similar to work itself. I enjoy working out and pushing my limits by challenging myself in competing in Bodybuilding competitions through the National Physique Committee.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
My most enjoyable experiences working at UPHS are the interactions I have with my clients and the members who attend my classes.
