What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am an RN and a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist at UP Health System - Doctors Park in Escanaba.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
Four of my brothers and sisters have worked in healthcare, so I guess that could definitely be an inspiration. Truthfully, I just always wanted to be a nurse from a young age.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
The majority of my days are spent seeing patients with diabetes for education, insulin pattern management, and assisting with all the navigation needed with diabetes and chronic diseases. I also do some care management, triage, and assist the nurses and physicians with paperwork, phone calls, and such.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have worked with UP Health System for 30 years. I first worked in home health and then as a chemo nurse in the local oncology clinic. For the last 14 years, I have been in my current position.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The technology involved in the field of healthcare has been ever-changing, especially when it comes to new technology and medicated to treat diabetes. Things like continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pumps, and more.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Gardening, walking, outdoor activities, and traveling are a few of my interests. Spending time with family and friends is always on the top of my list!
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I enjoy helping patients navigate their healthcare needs... and of course, my coworkers.
