What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am a certified medical assistant at the Medical Specialists Clinic at UP Health System – Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I was drawn to this profession because I have always been passionate about making a positive impact on someone’s life. Working in the medical field lets me work side by side with patients throughout their medical journey.  

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

No two days are the same in my position. I assist many providers in helping patients.  I work with these patients by educating them on lab results, giving them injections, answering their questions, speaking with insurance companies to obtain specialty drugs and just being there for them on their journey. 

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I started working here in November of 2022. I started as a clinic office clerk answering phones and checking patients in and out. I then became a medical assistant and eventually a certified medical assistant, which I have held for 2 years.  

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?  

A big change in my position is working with telemedicine providers.  When I started working for Medical Specialists, we did not have telemedicine as we do now.  

Being in a rural area, it is wonderful that we’re able to provide many specialties via telehealth that most big cities have readily available. I work side by side with Dr. Matijasic, the virtual rheumatologist. There are a lot of patients in the UP who had to travel several hours to be able to receive care, and now they can stay local and still receive treatment for even complex autoimmune conditions. Another huge change has been all the biosimilars coming out for medications. Helping patients navigate through the world of specialty medications is something I do daily.  

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem? 

Outside of work, I am an avid reader, sports enthusiast, and I love going to concerts. I also love spending time with my family, friends and pets. Typically, on the weekends, you can find me at a football/ hockey game or with my nose in a good book.  

My favorite local gem would have to be the Dead River Falls, the Presque Isle Bog Walk, or Snowbound Books.  

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

I enjoy being able to make a difference in the lives of those in my community. Making an impact on even just one patient is worth it in my book!
