UPHS – Portage Heroes | Amanda Fredrickson, OT
October 16, 2026
What is your role at UP Health System?
I’m an Occupational Therapist (OT) for the inpatient unit and swing bed, and PortagePointe.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I have always had a passion for healthcare, but it wasn’t until a personal injury during track & field in high school that I really became interested in OT, as I was able to experience it myself!
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I spend most of my time working in acute care and with patients who are participating in the swing bed program. I spend some time at PortagePointe a few days a week as well. Working in this field is fast-paced, and you definitely have to use your creativity. Building good relationships with patients is a huge component.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started at Portage in October of 2025 as the Life Enhancement Specialist for the swing bed program. After I passed my OT boards, I transitioned to a full-time OT position in January of 2026.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
As a newer employee, I haven’t experienced too many big changes yet, but I have been able to help welcome a new speech therapist, a few new PTs, and a new OT to our team! I have had the opportunity to train our newest OT, Maria, which has been a fun and new experience for me.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Maxx, golfing, skating, and visiting my sister, brother-in-law, & their dogs who live 6 blocks away from us! Maxx and I love the Fitz and the Drive-Thru Depot!
What do you enjoy most about working at UP Health System?
My favorite thing about my job is the amazing rehab team I get to work with every day. The dynamic of our group makes coming to work so easy and enjoyable.
