What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a Clinical Informaticist Analyst RN at UP Health System–Marquette (UPHS–Marquette).
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My aunt is my biggest inspiration. She started her career as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), became a nurse, and then became my college nursing professor. She had a tremendous influence, guiding and encouraging me throughout my journey in healthcare.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
There aren’t very many typical days in IT. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Cerner likes to bring a little new spice to the mix. But, on average, my role is about advocating for what is best for our staff and patients when it comes to the technology applications we use. I enjoy being able to bridge the gap between clinical workflows and technology to help make things work better for everyone whenever possible.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I’ve been with UP Health System for two years in my current role in nursing informatics. Before transitioning into informatics, I worked as a circulator in the operating room. Earlier in my career, I was a public health scientist and also worked as an emergency medical technician and certified nursing assistant. Having experienced healthcare from so many different perspectives has been incredibly valuable in my current role.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
Cerner has been one of the biggest changes and challenges. The amount of work that has gone into it from the initial go-live to where we are today has been tremendous. It’s an ever-moving target, but I hope everyone can see the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to continually improve it and make it work better for our staff and patients.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Games! I love games that bring people together. Nothing beats a family domino night, a friendly Mario Kart competition, or jumping online and playing games with strangers.
Local gem: Lake Superior Smokehouse- Pit My Mac is too good.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The people I work with and the departments I support. My coworkers do an amazing job, and I’m constantly learning from them. I’m also incredibly grateful for the departments I support — the OR, IR/Cath, Lab, and Diagnostic Imaging. Without their support, collaboration, and buy-in, I wouldn’t be able to accomplish much in my position.
So, a big shoutout to all of them!
