UP Health System – Marquette welcomes inpatient psychiatrists Samantha Leadbetter, DO, and Garett Braeburn, DO

UP Health System – Marquette (UPHS – Marquette) is pleased to welcome Samantha Leadbetter, DO, and Garett Braeburn, DO, to its medical staff. Both physicians are psychiatrists providing hospital-based care at UPHS – Marquette.

Leadbetter earned her degree in osteopathic medicine from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and recently completed her psychiatry residency at Michigan State University. As part of her training, she gained experience in adult and geriatric inpatient psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, addiction medicine and electroconvulsive therapy.

She also completed MSU’s rural psychiatry track in Marquette and previously served as a consultation-liaison psychiatrist providing regional care to communities across the Upper Peninsula. Her clinical interests include geriatric psychiatry, neuroscience, interventional psychiatry, including electroconvulsive therapy, and trauma-informed care.

“I was born and raised in Marquette. It has always been home to me and a lifelong goal to serve the community that shaped who I am today,” said Leadbetter.

Braeburn earned his degree in osteopathic medicine from Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry and sociology at Utah Tech University, graduating magna cum laude.

He also completed Michigan State University's rural psychiatry track in Marquette. Braeburn’s clinical interests include consultation-liaison psychiatry and electroconvulsive therapy. He chose to practice at UPHS – Marquette because it provides an opportunity to offer psychiatric services to more patients throughout the Upper Peninsula.

“As a psychiatrist, I get to work with and advocate for some of the vulnerable patients in our community,” said Braeburn. “Even though mental health has become more of a buzzword in pop culture, it continues to be an area of medicine that is overlooked and underfunded. I would love to help change that for our community.”

Both physicians bring specialized psychiatric expertise to UPHS – Marquette, supporting the hospital’s commitment to providing comprehensive care for patients throughout the Upper Peninsula.

UPHS – Marquette provides comprehensive, evidence-based inpatient behavioral health care for adults ages 18 and older who are experiencing acute mental or behavioral health concerns. The adult behavioral health unit offers a safe, therapeutic environment with 24/7 supervision, medical monitoring, crisis support and individualized treatment from an experienced team of behavioral health professionals and physicians. Services include assessment and crisis care, medication management, group and recreational therapy, caregiver consultation, mental wellness education and discharge planning. The unit treats a range of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis and thoughts of harm to self or others, as well as co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns.
