UPHS – Bell Heroes | Samantha Johnson, CMA

August 28, 2026

What is your role at UPHS Bell?

I'm a certified medical assistant in the Family Medicine Clinic at UP Health System – Bell. I'm also the primary coordinator for the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR) in Family Medicine.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I always knew I wanted to do something in healthcare, especially after taking HOSA in school.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

A typical day for me is rooming patients, giving vaccines, checking all our vaccines and fridge temps in the clinic, filling medications, calling patients, speaking with the Health Department and checking vaccine consent forms.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have been at UPHS – Bell for three years. I started as a receptionist in Family Medicine, switched to a medical assistant after 6 months, became primary in MCIR in 2024, and got certified last year.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

I would have to say when the MCIR website changed earlier in August, since I had to relearn everything again.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

I love going out to my camp on Little Perch and spending time with family, friends and my dog, Oakley.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Bell?

I enjoy the coworkers I work with in Family Med. There is never a dull moment around them, which makes every day enjoyable.
