What is your role at UP Health System?

I am an administrative secretary.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I was drawn to healthcare because it’s a field where work always feels meaningful. Even in an administrative role, I enjoy helping patients and providers feel welcomed, informed, & supported.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

I'm juggling solo tasks, payroll coordination, communication across clinics, etc. I'm constantly switching gears between different systems and different people's needs. Working in this field means staying organized and flexible at the same time, since priorities can shift quickly, but it's rewarding knowing the work I do behind the scenes can help keep things running smoothly for patients and employees.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I've been at UPHS – Portage for four years. I started as a patient services representative at Express Care Houghton/Fitness Center, and that role taught me more than I expected: how much a quick answer, a little direction, or reassurance during a stressful visit can do. I carry that with me here, and I have that team to thank for it.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

One of the biggest changes has been moving from a patient-facing role at Express Care, where I primarily registered patients and handled department-specific administrative tasks, to a position that involves broader collaboration. In my current role, I work with individuals across multiple departments and have built professional relationships with people I may not have otherwise met. This has expanded my understanding of the organization and strengthened my communication and teamwork skills.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

Adventuring with friends and family is always at the top of my list. I'm also a bit of a movie junkie. I’m always watching or streaming something to keep my list of recommendations up to par. As for local gems, Grandpa's Barn in Copper Harbor is a quiet, cozy bookstore worth the trip. A newer favorite of mine this past year has been the Eagle Harbor Inn restaurant.

What do you enjoy most about working at UP Health System?

It's the coworkers and the chance to help others that make you want to stay. From gaining advice, learning new things, collaborating well, and setting goals to work towards together, that's what keeps me here. I feel very lucky to be a part of it.
