What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a Billing Representative in the Central Billing Office at UP Health System – Marquette (UPHS – Marquette).
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I enjoy helping people. Since working in Behavioral Health, I have become more aware of and empathetic toward the growing mental health needs of our community, the Upper Peninsula, and the nation as a whole. I have built strong working relationships with the Behavioral Health Services providers I support and know I can rely on them whenever I need information or assistance.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I come in each day and post visit charges for Behavioral Health Services Inpatient, Neuropsychology, Neurology and Sleep Medicine.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed in the Central Billing Office for 28 years.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The biggest changes I have experienced are the additional requirements for billing mental health claims. There are so many things that have to be included on a claim for it to drop cleanly to ensure we get the maximum reimbursement. Also, a big change is in the new Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our daughter. We also have a son who lives in Ann Arbor, and we enjoy visiting him whenever we can. In my free time, I love camping, bowling, and spending time with family and friends. My favorite local gem is Presque Isle, where I enjoy taking in the natural beauty and relaxing outdoors.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The thing I enjoy the most about working at UP Health System is my coworkers, and then I really enjoy the Behavioral Health Clinic. The staff there has been phenomenal to work with and they help me in any way they can.
