What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am an advanced charge nurse in the neuro/ortho/pediatrics unit at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I worked in the nonprofit sector for a few years before realizing that nursing might be a good fit for me, and I went back to school at the age of 30. I believe nurses have the power to be modern-day healers, supporting not only a patient’s physical journey to healing, but their mental and spiritual well-being as well. This is a very empowering feeling for me, and I am proud of what I do and proud to be a nurse.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
In my new role as an advanced charge nurse, I get to see a lot of the behind-the-scenes aspects of working in healthcare, which is both exciting and an incredible experience. My day consists of finding ways to support not only my director, but also my coworkers as they provide the best possible care. I also help create meaningful interactions with our patients, which is one of the most rewarding parts of my role.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I accepted my first nursing position on the neuro/ortho/pediatrics unit in February 2023. In January of this year, I transitioned into the role of advanced charge nurse for the unit.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
I’m still a “baby nurse” and haven’t been here very long, but I can say I’ve experienced how quickly healthcare moves and changes. Especially in my role as an advanced charge nurse, seeing how much work and thought go into initiatives that create better patient care and safer practices has been very eye-opening. It helps provide the “why” behind our everyday practices and gives me a greater appreciation for the work being done across the organization.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I truly love Marquette and all it has to offer. I enjoy running along the lake, riding around town on my scooter, spending time with my cat, Gary, hunting for beach glass, reading and enjoying coffee from Provisions.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
Becoming a nurse has truly given me a sense of purpose. I owe who I am as a nurse to my coworkers. They have seen me through some of my hardest days and continue to encourage me to show up as my best self, both in and outside of work. I also enjoy the opportunities this position has brought my way and am grateful for the skills I continue to learn and develop.
