UPHS – Portage Heroes | Katrina Helminen, RN

June 26, 2026

What is your role at UPHS – Portage?

I am a registered nurse in the Family Birthing Center at UP Health System – Portage.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

My mom was an OB nurse here for over 40 years. I was inspired by her and knew I wanted to go into nursing at a young age. My two sisters are also nurses.

What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

Once assignments are decided for the day, I receive a report from the night shift nurse. I may be taking care of a patient in labor, admitting a patient for a scheduled C-Section or induction, or taking care of postpartum mothers and babies. No two days are the same, which keeps it interesting!

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I’ve worked at Portage for seven years. I did two years on the Medical-Surgical floor before taking a position in OB. I also worked in the UGL-Pediatric clinic as an LPN prior to getting my RN license.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

One of the biggest changes is that we are now the only OB unit in the area, so our patient load has increased pretty significantly in the last couple of years. It has been mostly a fun adjustment.

The midwives have also started since I came to OB. We are lucky to work with them!

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

I love enjoying the local beaches and Lake Superior in the summertime with my husband and girls.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?

The co-workers who have become friends make it a great place to work. We have a great team in OB! I’m also so grateful to get to be a part of the most special moments in labor and delivery.
