What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a social worker on the adult behavioral health unit at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I always knew that I wanted to help others, which led me to become a social worker. However, I did not necessarily think I would be in the healthcare setting. I was encouraged to intern here, and I enjoy trying new things, so I accepted. Once I started interning, I quickly learned I enjoyed the individuals we support, the care we provide, and the team environment.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
There is no typical day, and no two days are the same, which is one of my favorite parts of the job. Every day is a new adventure helping people navigate through difficult times. My responsibilities include assessments, leading educational groups and discharge planning. I spend most of my day identifying follow-up resources to provide a supportive environment to individuals at discharge. We work with external agencies to ensure follow-up care and support for each individual. This is one of my favorite parts as it allows me to help the individual get the care they need and deserve, as well as meet new people and build new connections. I work closely with our interdisciplinary team to identify different methods to support individuals through their hospitalization and after.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed here for a little over two years, but before that, I was a student for a year. I have remained in the same position and love it.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The biggest change I have experienced while in this role was switching charting systems. When I originally started full-time as a staff member, we were using the same charging system we used while I was a student. This allowed me to remember how to navigate the system rather quickly. However, about a month into working full-time, we switched charting systems, which was difficult to navigate.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, I enjoy reading, crafts, spending time with my dog, and camping with my fiancé, friends, and family. My favorite local gem is the ore dock at Presque Isle. I enjoy watching the ore boats and find them absolutely fascinating!
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The people I work with! I enjoy working with my coworkers, and they have truly helped shape me into the social worker I am, from being a student to now. They are supportive, caring, and advocate for the care our community members receive. I also enjoy being able to assist individuals firsthand through difficult times, providing support, compassion, and advocacy for them to discharge in a better state. It is truly amazing to see the transformations and changes they make between admission and discharge.
