UPHS – Marquette Heroes | David Swanson, RN

May 29, 2026

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am a registered nurse and the operations manager for Lakewood and Negaunee Family Medicine clinics.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I began volunteering at a local nursing home in elementary school, which introduced me early on to the importance of compassion, service and human connection. That experience helped me develop empathy and a strong sense of responsibility and it ultimately inspired my ongoing passion for healthcare and helping others.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

No two days are the same, which is one of the aspects I enjoy most about this role. My responsibilities involve supporting the team through a combination of process improvement initiatives, problem-solving and day-to-day operational support. I work closely with team members to identify opportunities to improve efficiency and streamline workflows.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have been employed with UP Health System since 2019 and have had the opportunity to grow through several progressive roles within the organization. I began my career as an RN on the Cardiac Unit before transitioning to UPHS – Bell as a Care Manager in the clinic setting.

In 2022, I advanced into the role of operations manager over the clinics at UPHS – Bell. In 2024, I transferred back to UPHS – Marquette as operations manager for several specialty clinics to further expand my operational and leadership experience. I currently serve as the operations manager for Lakewood and Negaunee Family Medicine.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

Some of the biggest changes I experienced in this position were the switchover and implementation of all the new systems.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

I enjoy spending quality time with my partner and son. Much of our free time is spent at our resort, where we enjoy working on projects together and taking advantage of the outdoors. I especially enjoy relaxing around a campfire, spending time on the lake, reading a good book or simply enjoying a well-earned nap. Living in the Upper Peninsula has given me a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty our area offers.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

Working alongside such dedicated individuals is what I enjoy most. The strong sense of teamwork and collaboration creates a supportive environment that makes coming to work both rewarding and enjoyable.
