What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a registered nurse in the
Emergency Department (ED) at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
During college, a friend
encouraged me to become an Emergency Medical Technician. I quickly became drawn
to the fast-paced environment, the teamwork and the complexity of human
physiology and treatments. I found myself motivated by the ability to directly
impact patient outcomes in critical situations. I also value being surrounded
by individuals who are committed to continuous learning and improving patient
care.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I start my day with an energy
drink and by continuing the outstanding nursing care from the previous shift. I
work alongside our wonderful nurses, doctors, imaging technicians, registration
personnel and transporters to stabilize and treat various medical and traumatic
conditions in patients of all ages. The department’s patient volume and acuity
changes constantly, requiring frequent reassessment, prioritization and
adaptability throughout my shift.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I am approaching my first
anniversary and have been in the ED the whole time.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The biggest changes I have
experienced have been improvements in my nursing practice. I have become more
confident in my patient assessments and more comfortable trusting my clinical
judgment. Over time, I have strengthened my ability to prioritize competing
demands, anticipate patient needs and respond effectively to rapidly changing,
high-acuity situations.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
During our long winters, I
enjoy snowboarding and in the summer months, I take my motorcycle for a spin.
Presque Isle Park has great scenery, even when it’s covered with
snow.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I enjoy working with my colleagues. The team environment is supportive and collaborative and I appreciate how everyone works together to provide the best possible care for patients.
