UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Lauren Reckker, FNP-C

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am a nurse practitioner with cardiothoracic surgery at UP Health System – Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

Both of my parents work in healthcare. My mom was an RN in the Emergency Department for years before working for a plastic surgeon. My dad is a CRNA. Growing up, I was always fascinated with the medical field, and I knew I wanted to follow in their footsteps and pursue a career in medicine.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

We start our day with a team huddle to review our patient list. Our group will then round on our inpatients in the ICU and cardiac units. If there are surgeries, we will be in the operating room. We also manage our outpatient population and follow up with post-operative patients in our clinic. We work patients up for a variety of surgeries, such as coronary artery bypass, heart valve replacement, lung resections, and other thoracic procedural care.

It is very rewarding to work in this field. I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to care for these patients from a critical care nursing perspective. Now, I can build on that knowledge and experience in my provider role.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I originally started volunteering in the hospital gift shop in 2008. I then started working at Grounds Abound, the coffee shop at the old hospital. In 2012, I began working in ICU/IMCU/CCU as a unit clerk/care aide while I was in nursing school. After graduating from nursing school in 2014, I got a job as an RN in the ICU. After a few years, I decided to work as a travel nurse. After a few years of traveling, I returned to work in the ICU at the new hospital while attending NP school.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

The biggest change has been going from a nursing role to a provider role. It is very different, but I have a great team that is very supportive in helping me grow in this new role. Another big change is being in the operating room and helping with surgeries.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

I enjoy spending time outdoors with my dogs year-round. I love exploring the ever-growing Noquemanon Trail Network by mountain biking and cross-country skiing with my dad. I like watching sports with my family and friends. I also enjoy making crafts, cooking and baking.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

I have always loved caring for the cardiothoracic patient population, and as a Marquette native, I am happy to continue caring for this community. I am also very fortunate to work alongside family members, friends and long-time mentors.
