UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Ryan Kashmark, CMA

March 20, 2026

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am a certified Medical Assistant at UP Health System – Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I have always been interested in healthcare as a career. As a high school student, I enjoyed my anatomy labs and shadowing experiences. It is a challenging but incredibly rewarding field when you are able to make a difference in another person’s life.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

My days can vary drastically. Some days involve travel to satellite clinics in Escanaba and Manistique. Other days, I am working on surgery scheduling, prior authorizations, imaging ordering and answering patient phone calls. I enjoy working in neurosurgery because I can visually see patient improvement after surgery.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have been in this same position since I was hired in 2021.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

There are constant changes in surgery scheduling as the hospital updates its policies. We are always trying to improve the patient experience and make communication between departments smoother.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

Outside of work, I enjoy outdoor sports such as golf and cross-country skiing. I also enjoy reading, hiking and relaxing on the beach of Lake Superior.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

I have great co-workers in the Brain and Spine office. I have appreciated getting to know them all!
